Last week saw Sands Beach Resort wave watching and kite flying at the beautiful Famara Beach as we sponsored the Spanish Champion Kitesurf Competition 2012 organised by La Santa Surf.

Champion kiteboarders Abel Lago for the men and Almudena Naranjo for the women retained their titles by putting on dazzling displays of skill and daring. Huge congratulations go to you both and indeed to all the riders who battled the elements to give us such an enjoyable competition week.

While the trademark Famara wind provided excellent conditions with 30 knots speeds and waves of up to 2 metres, the freestylers and wave riders provided the spectacular entertainment with their tricks and speed and Sands Beach Resort provided the cocktails. All in all a splendid combo’.

Safely ensconced on the beach in our chiringuito marquee with its chill out seating area, we avoided turning into sand sculptures and provided a billowing refuge in which to enjoy one of our super daikiri and mojito cocktails. Well, somebody has to do the catering

When the boards and kites had been packed up and the sand washed from collective hair, we all returned to the Mai Tai bar at Sands Beach Resort for the awards ceremony and close out party. The wind naturally decided to gatecrash the event which made for some blustery fun but with our Hacienda on-site restaurant as a back-up venue and live music to set the tone, an excellent night was had by all.
