Lanzarote means sun, sea, and sport to Nico

Nicholas Peter Ward Munoz, Nico to his friends, is a professional triathlete from Lanzarote, and backed by sponsorship from Sands Beach Resort Hotel, he finished a creditable 6th in the mens section of Lanzarote Ironman 2009. Now recovered from his heroic efforts, and training for future events, Nico spoke of his love of sport, and Lanzarote.
Triathlon takes in a 3.8 km swim, 180 kms cycling, and finally a 42.2 km run, Nico is part of the Titanes team and regularly pushes himself to the limits in many countries, but when did he first get the bug. “I came quite late to it at 16, when I was at Yaiza college, my teacher asked me to give it a try, but I was reluctant at first.”
Nico soon overcame his doubts and a good solid sporting background gave him a head start. ” I had always enjoyed playing most sports, such as karate, football and basketball, but triathlons were new to me, I loved it and built up until I could enter my first Lanzarote Ironman in 2002, and later joined the professional circuit.”
You need special qualities to shine in triathlon, Nico is very honest about his strengths and weakness’s. ” I sometimes think too much about every little part of my performance and i’m a real perfectionist, but against that, I see my perseverence as my biggest asset.”
Lanzarote has become famous for its annual Ironman contest from Puerto del Carmen, some 1,200 people compete, and many more join in the social events that surround it. Sport is a big part of Lanzarote life, and at Sands Beach Resort, we provide as many opportunities as possible for all ages, from our 6 plaza pools, to the sea lagoon – ideal for scuba and windsurf practice, plus our tennis courts and the nearby Costa Teguise golf course. The good thing is, Lanzarote can be anything you want it to be from an active sporting centre, to a sun kissed relaxation spot.
